Withings announces BeamO, the 4-in-1 multiscope for health check-ups while staying at home #CES2024

Like every year, Withings took advantage of CES in Las Vegas to unveil a new product. And it's almost a habit too, this one has been awarded three CES Innovation Awards. It must be said that the French company has established itself as a world leader in connected health for many years now. For 2024, Withings has therefore unveiled BeamO, a revolutionary 4-in-1 health checkup device. Indeed, for the first time, BeamO combines electrocardiogram, oximeter, stethoscope and thermometer sensors to transform the classic thermometer into a powerful tool for regular monitoring of heart and lung health. Powerful and smaller than a smartphone, it is designed to help families to carry out a health check-ups at home and significantly improve the quality of teleconsultations.

BeamO is a revolutionary multiscope device. Previously, body temperature was the only health test regularly performed at home. BeamO will revolutionize the measurement of the main vital parameters carried out during medical visits and will make them possible at home. This valuable data will provide an overview of users’ health status. They will help detect warning signs of potential health problems. Instead of taking these measurements several times a year in a clinical setting, it will now be possible to evaluate them on a daily basis. BeamO will be the thermometer of the future, making it possible to evaluate both the temperature and observe the condition of the heart and lungs.

Post-pandemic telemedicine has become commonplace. While convenient and cost-effective, remote consultations do not allow healthcare professionals to perform the same checks as in their office. BeamO will make this possible remotely with a device that combines the features of four different medical devices

Eric Carreel, Founder and President of Withings.

Powerful health analysis thanks to the multiscope

BeamO is equipped with cutting-edge sensors that on the one hand send light waves to interpret blood flow patterns and temperature, and on the other hand, capture acoustic waves to study the heart and lungs.

It combines several functions in a single portable device:

  • The heart in hand : photoplethysmography (PPG) and electrodes located on its sides will allow BeamO to simultaneously measure blood oxygenation (SpO2) and heart rate, while performing a medically certified single-lead electrocardiogram. A simple hold of BeamO will trigger real-time measurements visible on the animated color LED screen.
  • Body temperature: BeamO will take accurate and stable body temperature readings through non-invasive analysis of the temporal artery. This marks a real advancement compared to sensor technology Withings Thermo, the second-generation hotspot sensor is a single-element thermophile that narrows the focal zone of the infrared beam for non-contact measurements. The sensitivity of the scan will be increased, making it more resistant to changes in distance from the skin or movements.

  • Auscultation by digital stethoscope : BeamO will capture acoustic sound waves from the chest or back using a piezoelectric disc. With the help of intuitive tutorials, users will obtain precise measurements of the heart and lungs. Equipped with a USB-C to jack adapter, the results can be heard through headphones and transferred, stored and shared in the application. During teleconsultations, audio streaming will allow doctors to guide the placement of the devices and focus on specific areas of interest.

With these capabilities, BeamO will perform a 4-in-1 health assessment of body temperature, heart and lung health in less than a minute. It will be able to alert users in case of fever or infection, detect possible cardiovascular problems, including atrial fibrillation (AfiB), which is one of the most common forms of arrhythmias and issue alerts in case of abnormal heart rhythms.

In everyday use, BeamO is able to detect atrial fibrillation (AF) and alert you if your heart rate is too low or too high. BeamO is also able to detect too high a body temperature and potential signs of oxygen desaturation in the blood. It is also equipped with a digital stethoscope that allows you to listen to your heart and lungs. However, it is important to note that heart sounds and breathing sounds must be interpreted by a doctor. BeamO can also help doctors in the examination of diseases such as asthma or COPD.

A step forward towards

the complete, interactive and secure medical record

By automatically synchronizing with the Withings app via Wi-Fi, BeamO will create a complete health record day after day. To better track individual and family health journeys. Withings is also introducing new features in the Withings app for BeamO and its entire ecosystem of connected health objects.

This will make it even easier to track health data over time, which can be saved and shared. Thanks to the Withings app, users will be able to consult the complete history of their health readings, as well as the interpretation of their meaning and practical advice. Family medical history can also be downloaded and, if necessary, shared with doctors and other family members. It will be possible for several members of the same family to create individual profiles to use and share Withings devices.

Additionally, for the first time, the Withings app will allow users to enter medication information, set alerts and reminders to administer at appropriate times, and record usage and side effects that can then be shared with physicians to manage dosage and treatment effectiveness.
