At the end of the year, Nuki released its Nuki Smart Lock Ultra, its new connected lock in an ultra-small format, but nevertheless ultra-powerful. The only thing I could have criticized it for: the obligation to change the lock cylinder with a cylinder supplied with the Nuki Ultra, quite unusual for this manufacturer. But Nuki was already planning a version without changing the cylinder, using the usual key, as all its previous models did: the Nuki Smart Lock Pro. Officially announced today, I have had the chance to use it daily at home for a good month.
As we will see in this test, the Nuki Smart Lock Pro is very very close to the Ultra model: same form factor, same functionalities. The major difference is that it is based on the use of our classic door key, without needing to modify anything. Let's find out more…
Unboxing the Nuki Smart Lock Pro
If you read the previous Ultra review, you'll see that the packaging is very similar: just a little more compact, since the Pro doesn't come with a cylinder. So of course, we find this cylindrical lock well highlighted on the packaging.
Of course, this model is still compatible with Matter, Apple, Alexa, Google, and Samsung.
When we open it, we discover the Nuki Smart Lock Pro enthroned in its case, like a precious stone at a renowned jeweler's. And for good reason: it's a real technological gem that is revealed to our eyes. Even though I already had the Ultra model, sporting the same design, the stainless steel case instantly captivates the eye. This connected lock is not only smart, it is also terribly attractive. Nuki has really done a great job on these last two models.
The battery is directly integrated into the smart lock, and rechargeable via a magnetic connector.
To compare with the “classic” version: it's as if Nuki had only kept the central button. The miniaturization is quite impressive!
Inside the box, we find of course the lock, accompanied by two mounting plates (one to stick, the other to screw), an Allen key, a white ring to replace the black one already in place on the lock, a charging cable, and installation instructions.
Please note: no more classic USB-C port, the Nuki Smart Lock Pro innovates with a magnetic charging system. The cable provided is not a simple accessory, it is your essential ally to keep your lock operational. Store it carefully when you are not using it!
With the lock come two round plates that will allow the attachment to the door cylinder, one to stick thanks to the 3M in place, the other to screw.
Despite its small size, the Smart Lock Pro hides some pretty impressive innovations under its hood. The main one: a brand new brushless motor, a technology usually found in electric vehicles, allowing for a more powerful and quieter lock.
This new version is almost identical to the Ultra version, which is based on a specific cylinder. Only 12mm separates them: the Pro version is in fact a little longer by 12mm compared to the Ultra.
A small extension made necessary to accommodate most keys, since this time it was necessary to provide a location to insert a key head into the connected lock:

Installing the Nuki Smart Lock Pro
Exit the installation of a specific cylinder, this time we find the ease of installation that we appreciated so much at Nuki. Indeed, this lock is “simply” a motor that is placed on the key of the lock to mechanically turn the key for us. No modification therefore to be made to the door in question. And that is a big positive point.
You will have to start by installing the Nuki mobile application, available on both Android and iOS. If this is the first use, you will have to create an account, then ask to add a new lock.
A 5s press on the central button to wake up the lock and put it in pairing mode, and in a few seconds it is detected by the application.
The assistant then asks us if we want help to install the lock. If this is your first time, it is highly recommended!
We start by measuring the cylinder's protrusion inside, to determine which of the 2 plates to use.
Here I install the plate that tightens directly around my cylinder that protrudes just enough:

All that remains is to insert the key into the lock:
Then position the Nuki on the key:
And that's it: our connected lock is in place!
There are only a few small steps left in the application, which will involve updating the lock and renaming it to identify it more easily.
We can also choose to transfer data from a previous lock if we are replacing an old Nuki lock. This allows all settings and authorizations to be automatically resumed, which is very practical.
We can then indicate our geographic position, which will be used to manage the status of the lock if you are away or when you arrive home.
The wizard finally asks us to validate the type of our handle. This will be particularly necessary for calibrating the lock.
We close the door (without locking it), then the lock will perform a few rotations to determine the power required for closing, as well as the number of turns. And that's it!
The lock is now fully operational. It can be controlled from the application, or locally, either by pressing its central button or by turning it manually.
Of course, from the outside you can open or close it with your usual key if you wish (you will need to have a so-called “disengageable” cylinder, i.e. one that accepts a key from both sides even when a key is already present). But between us, once you get used to using the Nuki Smart Lock Pro, you no longer use keys.
You can then personalize your experience in just a few clicks! Activating Wi-Fi opens up a world of possibilities, allowing you to control your lock wherever you are. Don't worry, technophobes and privacy guardians: this step is not mandatory. Do you prefer to keep things simple? The local Bluetooth connection is still at your disposal.

The night mode of this connected lock offers additional security by ensuring automatic locking. Let's say I go out briefly after 10 p.m. to retrieve an item from my car. I unlock, go out, and come back in. If I forget to manually relock, the Nuki lock takes over and locks itself after 15 minutes. This smart feature ensures home security, even if I forget at night, perfectly illustrating the interest of this type of lock in our daily lives.
Similarly, the Auto Lock function can automatically lock the door after you go out, no matter what time of day it is.
The geolocation function provides an interesting convenience: it automatically unlocks the door as you approach. Imagine coming home with your arms full of groceries. No more hassle getting your keys out while juggling your bags! The door opens by itself, giving you effortless access to your home.
